Born outside Cleveland in Akron, Ohio and raised in South Bend, Indiana, I’m an artist, photographer, and designer. After earning an undergraduate degree from Indiana University, I returned home to help turn a bowling alley into a community center. It was during that return that I started making photographs as a way of documenting life and finding a sense of self in the post-industrial American Midwest. That observational posture, combined with an unabashed love of buildings and an interest in what’s coming next, makes up my artistic practice today.
My work is rooted in place, its aesthetics and histories. I spend my time on three things: photographing post-industrial American cities and self-publishing books of that work (Life in South Bend, Walking in Wheeling, Dreaming in Butte); running Tutt Street, my studio for creative direction, design, and publishing work; and helping operate Vested Interest, an old industrial complex being turned into studios, storefronts, and workspaces for artists, makers, and small businesses.
